Benoit’s Brain Shows Severe Damage
September 5th, 2007 by Brian Cantor
Latest turn in the Benoit story.
An analysis of Chris Benoit’s brain conducted by the Sports Legacy Institute found severe damage.
The damage, which is linked to the lifetime of concussions and head trauma Benoit suffered as a pro wrestler, resulted in a brain that “resembled that of an 85-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.”
Dr. Julian Bailes, who headed the tests, had also evaluated the brains of NFL players Andre Walters and Terry Long. Both committed suicide at a young age, and both showed similar signs of damage due to head trauma.
In Benoit’s brain, The tests indicated an advanced form of dementia, which appeared as dead brain cells, in all four lobes and the stem of his brain.
“This is something you should never see in a 40-year-old,” Bailes said.
Bailes added that there is no evidence linking steroids to the type of brain damage discovered in Benoit. All indications are that it was Benoit’s history of concussions that led to his seriously damaged brain.
