Update On Liddell-Jackson Rematch
February 26th, 2007 by Brian Cantor
When will Rampage get his title shot?
While UFC President Dana White publicly expressed plans to hold off on the anticipated Chuck Liddell vs. Quinton “Rampage” Jackson rematch until Jackson got one or two more UFC fights under his belt, the Wrestling-Observer Newsletter reports that current plans do indeed call for the title shot to be Jackson’s next bout.
If the tentative plans hold, Liddell will defend his Light Heavyweight Championship against Jackson on the May UFC PPV. Chris Leben vs. Kalib Starnes and Tito Ortiz vs. an unknown opponent (likely either Rashad Evans or Keith Jardine) are also expected for the event.
One potential factor in the acceleration of plans for Liddell vs. Jackson is the lack of other marquee challengers for the belt. Chuck has defeated most of the major players within UFC’s Light Heavyweight division, and because PRIDE’s top stars at 205 pounds are not over with the American crowd, bringing in an outside name would require the UFC’s top star to risk his belt against someone with whom he couldn’t draw an extremely large buyrate.
